Blighty Booch Metabolome Research

Blighty Booch Organic Kombucha is a family-owned business operating from SALSA, OF&G Organic, and Vegan Certified premises.

We produce high-quality organic Kombucha following a natural and authentic method of production.

We are a Great Taste Producer and the winner of Wales Food And Drink Awards Artisanal Producer 2023. In 2024 we were recognised as a finalist for the Innovation Award.  In 2020 our Blighty Booch Ginger Kombucha was recognised as a Top 50 product out of 12,700 entries in the 2020 Great Taste Awards.

The potential health benefits of our Blighty Booch Kombucha fermented tea for physical health and mental well-being are currently being tested by researchers at Aberystwyth University thanks to a Innovate UK grant. We are collborating with scientists to see how anti-inflammatory and other beneficial properties found in Kombucha may be enhanced and validated.

The human gut is teeming with life: it is home to more than 1,000 species of bacteria that help with digestion, produce signaling molecules for other organs and assisting the immune system. When this complex collection of microbes, collectively known as the gut microbiome, gets out of balance, it can result in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and can likely lead to metabolic disorders, inflammatory autoimmune conditions of the nervous system and vascular diseases.

Over an eight-week period, a group of healthy individuals was monitored for cognitive and behavioural performance, with inflammation and metabolomics of blood and urine samples after drinking Blighty Booch Kombucha.

The Head of the Department of Psychology at Aberystwyth University, Professor Nigel Holt, said: “We often talk about our ‘gut instinct’ but what we don’t always realise is that there is a direct link between our gut and our brain. Most of our serotonin is produced in the gut, for example. Our project is delving deeper into the microbiota gut-brain axis to measure the extent to which consuming a fermented product like kombucha can support our mental as well as our physical well-being and how we can help improve its health-related benefits.”

Dr Amanda J Lloyd from the Department of Life Sciences said: “ Alongside our testing, Blighty Booch are using their innovative fermentation technology to further improve the nutritional quality of authentic Kombucha and helping to develop evidence-based, value-added products with functional health benefits.”

Hippocrates wrote 2000 years ago that all disease begins in the gut. This new research at Aberysthwth University explores whether some diseases may end in it.
